Cour des Loges in Lyon is not something you would guess from Rue du Bœuf. The façade remains discreet, almost shy, among the houses of Vieux Lyon. Push open a carriage gate and the setting changes at once: a cobbled courtyard, stone columns, a spiral staircase that has been rising toward the upper floors since the 14th century.

Four buildings were gradually brought together there, between the 14th and 17th centuries. Silk merchants, a Jesuit college, modest apartments: each left a mark on the walls before the whole complex became a hotel in 1987. The renovation just completed, after thirty months of work (far longer than originally planned), restored the luster of the woodwork and original pigments without erasing the irregularities of the old structure.

At the center, a Florentine courtyard topped with a seventeen-meter-high glass roof serves as the hotel’s backbone. You cross it to reach the restaurant, or simply stop for a couple of minutes under the light falling from the glass ceiling.

Sixty-one rooms and suites are spread across the four buildings, linked by corridors whose levels change almost at every door. Some open onto the inner courtyards, others onto the pedestrian Rue du Bœuf. None really looks like the next: exposed beams here, a fireplace there, a clawfoot bathtub in one corner, a private jacuzzi elsewhere. This mix takes a little patience to navigate, and some corners can only be reached by an old staircase, which may require a bit of mobility. But that is also what makes no room quite like any other.

In the morning, head to the breakfast room, where the buffet highlights Lyon’s local terroir: regional cheeses, still-warm pastries, homemade jams. In the dining room, the staff has a reputation for remembering regulars’ first names by the second day. One detail to know before booking: the buffet comes at an extra charge, so it is better to mention it on arrival to avoid any surprise on the bill.

On the ground floor, Le Comptoir serves accessible bistronomic cuisine, while Les Loges, the Michelin-starred table of chef Anthony Bonnet, is reserved for the evening (closed on Sundays and Mondays). The chef often speaks of his grandparents, farmers in the Monts du Lyonnais: nothing was bought, everything was grown. That memory infuses the menu, between seasonal vegetables and rather light cuisine.

In the late afternoon, the 1341 bar slowly fills up. Order a drink there before heading down to the spa, where a heated indoor pool, hammam, and sauna are set within a setting of thick walls, worthy of the Middle Ages.

Outside, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral is a four-minute walk away, and the district’s traboules let you reach the Saône without having to go back through the same alley twice.

One final tip, for those arriving late: ask the porter to accompany you to your room the first time. Between the courtyards, the staircases, and the similar-looking doors, it is easy to get lost after 11 p.m.
