The Hôtel des Remparts opens onto Place Carnot in Lyon, fifty metres from Perrache station. The façade dates from the early 20th century, and it was long known as the Hôtel Dubost. You arrive with your suitcase, your ears still full of the noise from the platforms, and reception is there, open day and night. From the Perrache car park, the escalators drop you a few metres from the door.

The 52 rooms have been refurbished by interior designer Clémence Brebion, around three atmospheres with very Lyonnaise names: Fleuve, Lumières, Traboules. In the Traboules rooms, the tone is more authentic. In the Lumières rooms, more chic. Everywhere, air conditioning, a large bed, a private bathroom, and satellite television. Three rooms are adapted for guests with reduced mobility.

Some windows overlook the square, others the courtyard. Facing the square, you get the view and the life of the neighbourhood, with double glazing doing its job but sometimes letting a little street noise through in the middle of the night. Light sleepers should request a courtyard room when booking, where the quiet is clearest.

In the bathroom, the shower screen is short in some rooms. A towel placed on the floor before turning on the tap solves the problem in two seconds.

From early morning, breakfast gets underway at 6 a.m. and remains open until 10 a.m. It combines sweet and savoury: cereals, wholemeal or traditional bread, fresh fruit, fresh cheese, cured meats, scrambled eggs, and local products that change with the seasons. It is charged extra. It can also be served in your room.

Heading out, you can walk to Place Bellecour in about ten minutes, then on to Vieux Lyon and the shopping streets. The metro station is two hundred metres away. For dinner, Brasserie Georges is five minutes away, across the station. Rates start at under 80 euros a night, excluding trade fairs and events, which explains the mix of business travellers and couples on a weekend break.

If the last train arrives late, there is no rush: reception stays open all night.
